Octolens is the right call if brand mentions are a cross-team workflow and you want them routed into systems rather than read in a dashboard. It is the wrong call if Reddit is your only channel, because you would be paying multi-platform, API-first pricing for one source. Disclosure: this review is published by Peeklens, a Reddit monitoring tool that competes with Octolens on part of its surface area.

What Octolens is and who it is for
Octolens describes itself as social listening for the agent era, and it is aimed squarely at B2B SaaS and developer tool companies. Their own positioning is that they monitor the platforms modern software companies care about, filter the noise with AI, and deliver structured mentions into the places teams already work.
The customer logos on their site are the clearest signal of the target buyer. They feature Vercel, Railway, Prisma, PostHog, Render, Tally and Medusa, with named people from developer relations and growth teams. That is not an accident. Octolens is built for a company where several people need to see mentions, where engineering wants the data in an API, and where a missed complaint on Hacker News is a real problem.
The core loop
- You add keywords. Their onboarding reads your site and uses that company context to help tune each term.
- Every matching mention is scored by AI for relevance, and tagged with sentiment and a category such as buy intent, competitor, bug report or press.
- You build feeds from those tags, or use their prebuilt ones for brand monitoring, competitor intelligence and buying intent.
- Feeds go out through Slack, email, webhooks, the REST API or an MCP server so an AI assistant can query your mentions directly.
What Octolens genuinely does well
Breadth without a second tool
Reddit, X, LinkedIn, GitHub, Stack Overflow, Hacker News, DEV, YouTube, Bluesky and TikTok in one feed. For a developer tool, GitHub and Stack Overflow coverage is unusual and useful.
Common-word brand names
AI filtering is what makes monitoring a name like Render or Tally survivable. Plain keyword tools drown you. This is the strongest argument for paying for Octolens.
API and MCP on every plan
Most listening vendors gate the API behind an enterprise call. Octolens ships full API access, webhooks and an MCP server on all tiers, which is a real differentiator.
Unlimited seats
Seats are unlimited on both paid tiers. If support, DevRel and marketing all need access, per-seat pricing elsewhere closes the gap on cost quickly.
Honest limitations
The entry price is the headline problem
Pro starts at $159 per month billed annually. There is no cheap tier and no free plan, only a 7-day trial. For a pre-revenue founder or a solo operator, that is roughly a hundred dollars a month more than the Reddit-focused tools, and most of the extra buys platforms you are not selling on yet.
Ten keywords on the entry plan
Pro includes 10 keywords, with additional keywords listed at $10 each per month. Ten covers a brand name, a product name and a handful of competitors. It does not cover the long list of problem phrases you would need if the goal is finding new buyers rather than tracking your own name.
Volume pricing can drift upward
Mentions beyond your quota keep flowing and get billed per mention, from about $0.013 on Pro and $0.01 on Scale. You can set a spend cap or switch flex mentions off, which is fair of them to offer, but a viral thread is also a billing event. Budget accordingly.
Hourly refresh on Pro
Real-time refresh is a Scale feature. Pro refreshes hourly. For brand reputation that is fine. For catching a Reddit thread while the author is still online and the comment section is still short, an hour is a meaningful delay.
It stops at the mention
Octolens finds and routes. It does not draft the reply, does not know a subreddit's rules or tone, and does not help you judge whether posting in r/SaaS today will get you removed by a moderator. If the slow part of your week is writing replies that do not read like marketing, this is not the tool that fixes it.
Octolens compared to the alternatives
The useful comparison is not feature count, it is scope. Octolens is wide. Reddit tools are deep on one platform. Pick based on where your buyers actually are.
| Tool | Entry price | Platforms | Reply help | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Octolens | $159/mo annual | 13+ | No | Funded SaaS teams |
| Peeklens | $19/mo | Yes, drafts | Reddit as a sales channel | |
| RedShip | $29/mo annual | Yes, suggestions | Reddit plus SEO angle | |
| F5Bot | Free | Reddit, HN, Lobsters | No | Bare keyword alerts |

Who should actually buy Octolens
We would point you at Octolens without hesitation if this sounds like you:
- You sell a developer tool and conversations happen on GitHub, Stack Overflow and Hacker News as much as on Reddit.
- Your brand name is a common English word and unfiltered keyword alerts are unusable.
- More than two people need the mentions, and they live in Slack rather than in another dashboard.
- You want mention data in your own systems, piped into a CRM, a ticket tracker or an agent workflow through the API or MCP.
- A $159 monthly line item is rounding error against the cost of missing a public complaint.
When a different tool fits better
- You only sell through Reddit. Paying for thirteen sources to use one is the most common way to overspend in this category.
- You want leads, not mentions. Relevance scoring answers "is this about us". Buying intent scoring answers "is this person shopping right now". Those are different questions.
- Writing the reply is your bottleneck. Octolens hands you the thread and stops. Look at ReplyGuy or a drafting tool instead, with the account risks we cover there.
- Your budget is zero. Start with F5Bot, confirm anyone is talking about you at all, then pay for tooling.
Where Peeklens fits, and where it does not
We build Peeklens, so read this section knowing that. We do not think Peeklens replaces Octolens for a funded SaaS company running community at scale. Octolens covers more sources, ships a real API and MCP server, and is built for teams.
Peeklens goes the other direction. It covers Reddit only, scores every thread from 0 to 10 on buying intent rather than topical relevance, tracks competitor complaint and alternative-seeking threads, and drafts a reply in the tone of that subreddit that you edit and post yourself. Nothing auto-posts. Plans start at $19 per month.
The honest split: if the job is knowing what the internet says about your brand, Octolens wins. If the job is turning Reddit threads into customers this quarter on a founder budget, a Reddit-specific monitoring tool is the better fit, and it costs an eighth as much.
